Zan Strumfeld has created her sound over the years, first as a solo folk artist, and now as the leader of Zan & the Winter Folk, which formed in 2017 after Strumfeld brought together an eclectic group of musicians with wide ranging influences including folk, bluegrass, jazz and rock. She calls their sound "winter folk" and says her inspiration may be the cliché of heartbreak, but her turn of phrases and musical lines are full of literary references. Since forming, the band has been named to several "best of" lists, and been nominated for numerous awards including "Best Folk Artist" at the 2019 Eddies.
Zan & the Winter folk have opened for acts including Grammy-nominated Robbie Fulks, Sean Rowe, Ben Caplan, and The National Reserve.
