Jimmie Dale Gilmore

Jimmie Dale Gilmore

A janitor whose love of movies got him to appear in the Big Lebowski and a musical virtuoso who went on to win a Grammy with Old Crow Medicine Show.

This is episode 38 of Caffe Lena: 60 Years of Song. Thank you to Sarah at the Caffe for the list of songs and artists for the feature.

Jimmie Dale Gilmorerecorded his first album in 1972 and took a break that lasted for 16 years. During that time he joined an ashram in New Orleans and worked as a janitor in a synagogue in Denver. For the film buff, you may notice he randomly appeared in movies like The Thing Called Love, Parkland, and The Big Lebowski.

Chance McCoy is a true musical virtuoso. In one weekend alone, he took home top honors for fiddle, banjo, and dulcimer at the prestigious West Virginia State Championships. He tried touring with his first band but came home with less money each time, supporting himself and his son with food stamps and teaching fiddle lessons. Then he got a call asking him to audition for Old Crow Medicine Show and went on to win a Grammy for best folk album with the group.
