Mass MoCA keeps upping the game! This summer is jam packed! Not only are they playing host to Solid Sound (weekend passes sold out, but Friday and Sunday passes are available), and Freshgrass Festival, but they just announced The Pretenders!

The notion of unknowns doing what they had to do to become stars. It's as long as time.

New York Times best-selling author Marc Shapiro has been writing books on pop culture for many years. He's written about stars like Susan Sarandon, Adele, Santana, George Harrison, Justin Bieber, and now has written about BTS and the phenomenon called K-Pop.

Hozier at The Palace
WEXT

I sat down with Hozier at The Palace Theatre before his sold out show on March 11, 2019.  Hozier had just begun his tour and was downright ebullient over the release of his second album, "Wasteland, Baby."

We talked about his relationship with the blues and R&B, and his mother the the visual artist, and more.

Local musician Maria known as Belle Skinner splits her time between Albany and Brooklyn. This weekend she will be  in Albany  headlining a show alongside Girl Blue and Zan & the Winter Folk. Saturday at the Linda Performing Arts Center. Go to hear her soprano voice that will mesmerize you and the nostalgic sound of her music that will have your heart.

Rebecca Loebe "Give Up Your Ghosts"
Artist

One of my favorite singer-songwriters has been Rebecca Loebe. She caught my attention, like she did millions of others, when she was on the first season of NBC's The Voice.  Much to my chagrin, she was not in the final running.

THE MAMMALS SHARE FIVE NEW SINGLES GIVING PROCEEDS TO “SUNSHINERS”

Ruth Ungar and Mike Merenda of The Mammals make their home in West Hurley, NY (nearWoodstock) and while they’ve supported their family thus far thru their music career, this recentturn has been a head scratcher. Live shows are still a source of income, but the actual sale ofphysical or digital recordings has become a novelty rather than a mainstay. Rather than stopcreating new work, though, they keep doing it. Why?

Donna The Buffalo

Friday December 14th at 8pm see the dynamic band Donna the Buffalo wsg TX singer-songrwriter Olivia Quillio at Cohoes Music Hall!

Donna the Buffalo has been around for almost 30 years now! Throughout their time they've released 10 albums, created one of the first grassroots festivals that now has 15,000 attendees, and raised a 'Herd' of devoted fans.

I sat down with Kam Franklin of Houston TX Gulf Coast Soul Band, who are here tonight at The Egg! They have created quite a buzz since their debut EP and Album adding performances on The Late Night Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and NPR’s famous Tiny Desk Concert series to their resumes. Come out tonight to see why after seeing The Suffers perform David Letterman said, “if you can’t do this [gestures to band] get out of show biz! What a mighty, mighty, soul band.”

Brett Dennen
Maria del Rio

It's been a very busy year for singer-songwriter Brett Dennen.  He released two EP's ("Let's..." in February and "Here's Looking At You Kid" in August), toured non-stop; solo and with Jason Mraz on his "Good Vibes" tour, and became a dad to Cat Van Dennen (Yes!

Two-thirds of Donnybrook Fair
WEXT

Kevin, Jeff and Davy. They were known as Donnybrook Fair, and from 1975 until around 1984, these three toured the world with their raucous - even somewhat aggressive - brand of Irish folk rock.

And now, they're back! They're playing a show up at the track (8/22), and they've got a big show at The Egg on Friday, August 24th.

Hear the stories and the fun that was Donnybrook Fair with Kevin McKrell and Jeff Strange.

Livingston Taylor
Artist

The other day, Livingston Taylor was out on Martha's Vineyard enjoying the beautiful summer weather. I had the chance to catch up with him. We talked all about his life in music - teaching, performing, surrounding himself with amazing young talent, and about how he and his siblings (James, Kate and little brother Hugh) have great admiration for each other, while still being a bit competitive.  There's obviously a lot of love in that Taylor family.

The Bacon Brothers
Artist

Had the chance to talk with Michael & Kevin Bacon about their new album, the song "Tom Petty T-Shirt," and more.  We are super excited that they'll be at The Egg on Sunday, July 29th.

Hear that conversation here.

Saratoga County Fair
Agency

We've all seen Dave Michaels on his quest for funnel cake. See the video below.  It looked so good!  Lots of great things happening at the Saratoga County Fairgrounds this week. The Fair runs through Sunday. Do come on out!

Chris Wienk talked with Saratoga County Fair Director, Tammy Ballestero.  Find out some of the cool agricultural offerings at this year's Fair.

Mark Lavengood
Sarah Herzog Photography

Mark Lavengood spent time honing his touring skills working and playing tunes with Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys.  Now, he's back out on his own making tunes.  And this week, he was driving from Michigan accross to New York to pick up his band en route to Grey Fox Bluegrass.  Hope you get the chance to see him soon.

Thanks for the talk, Mark.

Grey Fox Bluegrass 2018
Agency

My friend, Mary Burdette and I talk about the new idea at Grey Fox Bluegrass - an artist in residence (aka Billy Strings for 2018), fun things happening at the Festival, and the one thing she hopes she won't miss when working/attending this year's Festival.

John Butler
WEXT

John Butler and I sat and chatted before he headed out to the show he would have at The Egg on July 12th.  We discussed things like 20 years of John Butler Trio, the whole idea of this "plus" tour, his new album that is coming, and of course the song "Ocean."

Thanks for stopping by, John!

The Big Takeover at WEXT
WEXT

We are so excited that Amsterdam's Riverlink Concerts is bringing the New Paltz reggae band to town this summer. The Big Takeover will be under the tent along the river on July 28th (rain or shine...a great location for a show!).

Bring your dancin' shoes, or your rainboots!  Chris Wienk talks with Nee Nee about their summer tour, and the new single.

Meet the Guys Behind "The Brothers"

Apr 18, 2018
Michael Rivest, Earl Thorpe, & Persell McDowell
WEXT

Michael Rivest, who writes for the TU and does a ton of great things in the community, talked with a couple of friends - Earl Thorpe (who currently sings with The Heavenly Echoes) and Persell McDowell. The two were at the core foundation of "The Brothers," a Civil Rights, activist group formed in Albany in the mid-1960s. Hear about that, and Earl's earlier group The Fidelity's, a doo wop group from the late 50's.

Bovine Social Club
Artist

Surely seeing or hearing a name like Bovine Social Club would conjure up images of cattle gathering.  Is there a club for such a thing?  Well in a sense, yes.  In this case people are not coming together to discuss cows, or any such variation.  Instead, this is a band with a unique and humorous outlook rich in Americana roots. Don't miss this rare treat, April 7th at Wolf Hollow Brew Company.

Lera Lynn
Artist

The young woman who was the performer on the second season of HBO's True Detective, Lera Lynn - singer, songwriter, performer, is coming to The Massry Center on February 2nd. For more information, visit the Massry Center website. To buy tickets, click here.

2017 Black Friday Live @ EXT Marathon

(all start times approximate, and subject to change)

The goal with these live sessions with interview is to help you get a little closer to the artist, to learn more about what motivates her/him.

Listen: Hurray for the Riff Raff

Sep 21, 2017
WEXT

After leaving her home in the Bronx as a teenager, Alynda Segarra hitchhiked, train hopped, and made her way to New Orleans where she learned how to play music and started the band Hurray for the Riff Raff. Segarra has proven herself to be a prominent voice for a new generation of folk singer-songwriters. Hurray for the Riff Raff's new album "The Navigator" strays a bit from the band's traditional folk sound, but Segarra shines as she tunes in to her Puerto Rican roots, and shares a powerful message and story.

The Nell Robinson & Jim Nunnally Band
WEXT

Hillary Perkins, a.k.a. Nell Robinson met Jim Nunally at a jam. Pretty quickly, they realized they share musical thoughts. The two embarked on their next journey, which has resulted in a couple albums, a cool concept show, and the latest recording, "Baby, Let's Take The Long Way Home."

Nell and Jim have teamed up with Jon Arkin (percussion) and Jim Kerwin (bass) to form the band that stopped by our studios on Friday (9/15/17).

Chris Wienk with Wanda Fischer of WAMC
WEXT

One of my favorite DJ's is Wanda Fischer. She has this way on the radio that makes you feel like you've been friends forever. She is a true treasure. So, when I heard that Wanda was about to celebrate her 35th year as our Saturday night companion on WAMC's Hudson River Sampler, I thought I had to get her over to talk about some of those memories and have her play some of her favorite songs.

Happy 35th anniversary, Wanda!

The Del McCoury Band
Artist

Chris Wienk caught up with the ever moving Del McCoury ahead of their appearance at the 2017 Freshgrass Festival (9/15-17/2017).

Del talks all about his life in music, playing with his sons in the band, David Grisman, and Bill Monroe.

See The Del McCoury Band and Del & Dawg at Freshgrass (9/15-17). For more information, visit the Mass MoCA website.
