Talking with songwriter Lori McKenna is a little like talking to the other parents at back-to-school night. She may be an award-winning Nashville songwriter with multiple No. 1 hits to her name, but she lives a down-to earth lifestyle raising her five kids in Stoughton, Mass., far from Music Row. Perhaps it's that normal life that helps keep her songs grounded and relatable.

McKenna won a CMA for Song of the Year in 2015 and a Grammy for Best Country Song in 2016 for co-writing Little Big Town's "Girl Crush." For years, she has steadily written songs for Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. McKenna's own musical style is more low-key, as you can hear on her new album, The Bird & The Rifle, and in this World Cafe performance. She makes writing these heartfelt songs seem effortless.
