A Conversation with Warren Haynes: Gov’t Mule Gears Up for Their December 28 Return to Proctors Theatre

GRAMMY-winning vocalist, songwriter, and guitar legend Warren Haynes joined us to preview Gov’t Mule’s return to Proctors Theatre on December 28, where the band kicks off their annual New Year’s run. He reflected on how the long-running tradition has evolved, why starting the celebration in Schenectady sets the right tone, and what makes this year’s New Year’s Eve tribute to the music of 1971 such a powerful theme. Haynes also discussed the creative process behind The Whisper Sessions, including revisiting “Melissa” with Derek Trucks, and shared insights into his first-ever full solo tour coming in 2026.

We also touched on his new Gibson signature Les Paul, and the collaborations that still surprise him. Through it all, Haynes opened a window into how he decides which musical ideas belong to Gov’t Mule versus his solo work or other projects. Catch Gov’t Mule at Proctors Theatre on Sunday, December 28—tickets available now at Proctors dot org—for a night of masterful musicianship to kick off the year-end celebrations.
