Kashus Culpepper is the kind of artist who sounds fully formed, even at the very beginning. The Alabama-born singer-songwriter has quickly become one of the most talked-about new voices in American music, blending country, soul, blues, folk, and rock with a raw, sandpapered growl that feels both classic and urgent. His path—from singing in church at five, to teaching himself guitar during a Navy deployment in Spain, to honing his sound in Gulf Coast dive bars—has shaped a storyteller grounded in lived experience and Southern tradition.
Just before Christmas 2025, that journey brought Culpepper to the WMHT Television Studio, where we recorded a special Live@EXT session in front of a captivated audience. Stripped down and immediate, the performance showcased the emotional weight and musical range that have earned him praise from icons like Elton John and John Mayer. With his debut album Act I —recorded in Muscle Shoals and spanning 18 deeply felt tracks—the Live@EXT session captured a powerful moment: an artist on the brink, sharing his songs exactly as they’re meant to be heard.
