Singer-songwriter Andrew Sa stopped by the studio to talk about his highly anticipated debut album, American Rough, arriving June 26.
During our conversation, Sa reflected on his musical roots growing up in California, from singing along to country classics in his father’s pickup truck to performing karaoke as a child. He also shared how artists like Rufus Wainwright, k.d. lang, and the great jazz vocalists helped shape his unique blend of country, folk, and timeless songwriting.
We discussed the making of American Rough, a deeply personal collection of songs exploring love, masculinity, vulnerability, and queer identity. Sa spoke about working with producer H.C. McEntire, paying tribute to his friend and mentor Patrick Haggerty of Lavender Country, and creating a record that honors country music traditions while telling stories that feel fresh and universal.
With its rich storytelling, heartfelt performances, and cinematic sound, American Rough marks an impressive debut from one of the most compelling voices emerging from Chicago’s independent music scene.
Listen to our full interview with Andrew Sa, hear him and guitarist Aaron Smith perform, and be sure to check out American Rough when it arrives on June 26.
