Julia Alsarraf has a new album out, In Fidelity. She realized just how polarizing that title was when it was read aloud as she received an arts grant to complete the record—but she takes it in stride. Julia takes a lot of things in stride, in fact, and folds them directly into her music.
In Fidelity is raw and relatable—heartfelt, truthful, and unflinching. It takes a hard look at messy emotions and the decisions we make when our lives are in flux. When are they not, you might ask?
Julia rises to the challenge of making an album that feels universally relatable while remaining deeply personal and complex. I did a speed listen to In Fidelity because I couldn’t wait to dive into the storytelling woven throughout her songwriting. She describes the album as one long story—broken into individual songs—each chapter contributing to the whole. Her next album, however, she refers to as a collection of short stories, and I can’t wait to hear them.
Julia is proudly not on social media, something I genuinely appreciate. Her authenticity and stark honesty are rare qualities these days—but Julia possesses them in spades.
