The Dust Bowl Faeries have never been afraid to color outside the lines, and their new album, Oh Dread, is another wonderfully unpredictable trip through their musical world. Blending rock, cabaret, punk, folk, and plenty of theatrical flair, the Hudson Valley-based band creates music that can be playful, provocative, and deeply personal.
In my conversation with Ryder and Jon of the Dust Bowl Faeries, we dig into Oh Dread, the stories and sounds behind the album, and the vibe that makes the band such a distinctive presence on the local music scene. Their music has a theatrical quality, but there’s plenty of heart—and a healthy dose of weirdness—along the way.
And rather than just talk about it, Ryder and Jon play two songs live in the studio, giving us a chance to hear that unique energy firsthand.
