A New Space for Vulnerable Songs: Shannon Tehya & Troupe Productions Launch Open Mic at The Eleven
Sometimes the most important songs are the ones that make you a little nervous to sing out loud.
That’s the idea behind a new monthly open mic from Shannon Tehya and Troupe Productions, launching Thursday, September 3 at The Eleven at Lark Hall in Albany. Held on the first Thursday of each month, the open mic is designed as a welcoming, supportive space especially for femme and queer artists to share vulnerable songs, stories and sounds.
Shannon Tehya and Hayley Stafford recently took over WEXT to talk about the idea behind the series — and to put the concept into practice. Each shared a couple of songs that speak directly to the kind of openness and honesty they hope the open mic will encourage.
It’s another step in Troupe Productions’ mission to create healthier, more equitable spaces for local artists and build community through music.
The open mic is free, and performers are encouraged to come prepared with two songs. The first edition happens September 3 at The Eleven, 351 Hudson Avenue in Albany.
