Yahz Finds Her Voice Through Music, Poetry, and More
Local 518 artist Yahz is continuing to carve out her own space with a new EP, "It's My Party It's Okay If I Cry," arriving September 12 with a release celebration at Paper Moon from 6-8p. Yahz’s music draws from country, alternative, indie, and soulful influences, with an introspective quality that makes her songs feel deeply personal.
In my conversation with Yahz, we talked about the new EP and the journey that brought her to making music. She also opened up about her love of poetry, how she first began creating music, and the ways songwriting has become an important form of expression. We also had a thoughtful conversation about mental health, including Yahz’s concerns about the particular challenges and risks young Black women can face.
The result is a revealing look at an emerging Local 518 artist who is using music and poetry not only to tell her story, but to better understand herself and connect with others.
