Eliades Ochoa is one of the greatest Cuban soneros of all time. He was one of the founding members of the Buena Vista Social Club project that Ry Cooder helped bring to America in the late 90's.
We touch on the Social Club, and his upbringing as a guajiro, or farmer - his family had a farm growing up. His father got him his first guitar, Eliades took off from there. But his roots in that farming community have stayed with him, and his latest album called "Guajiro" he says, "represents him" to the core.
Special thanks to Evora Vicents Sande who acted as translator. I have always loved hearing Spanish spoken, but I still don't know more than five words. I understood some of what Eliades said, and was so thankful to have Evora on the line to make sure the interview went off without a hitch.
I'm so very excited to see Eliades Ochoa at Music Haven on Sunday, August 11. Hope you will join us!
